Too Cool T-Shirt Quilt

My nephew graduated from high school this past May. My sister had hidden away t-shirts from his middle and high school activities. She sent them to me and, with the help and guidance of the Too Cool T-Shirt quilt resources, I turned them into a quilt to commemorate the culmination of his secondary school experiences.

The Too Cool crowd uses multiples of 4 for dimensions in cutting the t-shirts into blocks. You cut blocks as small as 4 X 4 and as large as 16 X 16 any multiple of 4 dimension in between giving you the opportunity to size the block to the size of the logo on the shirt, not a cookie cutter block that has more t-shirt knit than logo. There is an amazing formula for determining the dimensions of the finished quilt based on the size and number of your t-shirt blocks. Then the real fun begins, puzzling the pieces to fit in the dimensions of the quilt. My math brain was in heaven. My hat goes off to Andrea Funk and her crew of amazing t-shirt quilt designers. Their book and rulers really simplified this project.

Phineas was a champ when it came to piecing. He handled the various thicknesses of the t-shirts and even tackled the addition of tech materials with little difficulty. We chose a forest green minky for the backing to make the quilt nice and cozy. Phineas was a bit trepedatious when it came to free motion quilting with this new stretchy material, but the super glider kept things moving. I did need to clear his bobbin case with each new bobbin. All in all, we had a great time creating this quilt.

Congratulations, Connor

Be calm and stitch on…
